Cingular is the new AT&T, don't link to them!

I read an interesting post on MobileCrunch the other day, regarding Cingular's new linking policy. Apparently they don't want anyone linking to anything but their homepage and you can only link to their homepage if you don't say anything negative about them. The new AT&T I ask you this, what's the best way to get people to link to you and say negative things about you? Answer: tell them they aren't allowed.

I was talking to Darla Mack about this in the light of her post about, and our subsequent conversation regarding, the restrictions put on the Cingular Nokia E62 (that's another post/rant right there) and decided to blog about it as well. Turns out I am most definitely an infringer upon Cingular/AT&T's linking policy from when I negatively portrayed Cingular as evil (and linked to them at the same time, oh my!) for restricting third party application installation on the Nokia E62. I wonder if they will sue me? Here's hoping...

EQO Mobile users, this stance taken by a major wireless carrier epitomizes the challenges we face in delivering you quality service. Application signing you ask? We can't even link to them...

Cingular Nokia E62 Users, Rejoice!

Well, due to the industrious labours of one EQO user, you can now use EQO mobile (and begin to see why you really should like us!)--Check out his instructions for exactly how to do this, http://community.eqo.com/forum/installing_eqo_mobile_onto_cingular_nokia_e62*.

Nokia E62 from Cingular

A kind Cingular E62 user called Nokia and they told him that Nokia ships the E62 to Cingular and then Cingular installs their own ROM, which does not allow the installation of unsigned J2ME applications. Unsigned Symbian apps are just fine, but apparently they consider J2ME to be more dangerous? Anyway, I’m not sure what type of signing they are looking for and whether third party signing would be acceptable or only Cingular signed apps are allowed to install. In any case, we might as well try third party signing to see if that will do. We have a Verisign test certificate here that we can use with EQO Mobile and I’m wondering if there are a few Cingular E62 users who’d be willing to try. If you are interested, send me an email to chris@eqo.com and we’ll give it a go. Also, chances are that if you are reading this more than a few days after posting that I’ve already found enough users. Thanks and hopefully we can figure out how to get EQO Mobile onto these phones.
