Problem with BlackBerry 8120 (OS 4.5.0.81) with WiFi ONLY (no data plan)
Submitted by nd7 on September 4, 2008 - 6:24pm.
Hi, I have a blackberry 8120 and no data plan (I don't need it since I have another phone from company that provide data plan). Once I install EQO on the 8120, I can sign-in and add IM accounts. All is excellent. But if I exit the porgram, or if I moved in and out of WiFi; EQO will not connect again and just say connection timeout. I know the connection is fine as I'm using the hotspot browser to read emails and web site. I can get EQO work again if a do a FACTORY reset and EQO will again work ONCE. After any kind of program exit or network disconnect, then EQO will forever timeout. Anyone have this problem? Trackback URL for this post:http://community.eqo.com/trackback/1460

Try to recycle the WiFi connection and then try to connect again. Before connection, the client checks the WiFi strength signal. Peter WiFi Connection on 8120Submitted by nd7 on September 5, 2008 - 10:29am.
I tried, no difference. I also tried to PULL the battery, still no good. The only thing works is factory restore. The first time use after install is fine. After that, no more connection. I also tried on a 8120 with OS 4.2. The same issue. I think maybe EQO is thinking the connection is on something else, like EDGE, somehow after the first time. So, it never works again since I'm on WiFi only. Unfortunately I don't have EDGE data plan to prove my guess. re: WiFi Connection on 8120Submitted by peter on September 8, 2008 - 2:50pm.
You could try to edit the application permissions for EQO. Select options, advanced options, applications, and then select EQO and select edit permissions. Then, under Connections, try to turn off the Carrier Internet permission and see if that helps. Also, during the installation of EQO did you see an "Application Permissions" security question: "Would you like to grant EQO Trusted Application status?". I think you may need to say yes to this question. If you didn't say yes, then you will need to uninstall and then reinstall from scratch and make sure that you say Yes this time. I did factory reset, install, connect first time to EQO and IM (successful), power off (power 'red' button), power on, connect to EQO (failed). I have allow everything on my application permissions except to carrier INTERNET. I don't have data plan on this phone while I'm roaming. The thing is that why would the EQO client work the first time right after install and not any other time? Is there a debug switch I can turn on to collect some info so your staff can see what the client is trying to connect through and get the timeout? re: permissionsSubmitted by peter on September 15, 2008 - 4:38pm.
I am sorry, but there is no debug setting--we would need to create a debug version, which would invovle a lot of development time. I am still not sure why this is happening. Did you try with the permission setting open to carrier internet? The client should try WiFi first. Perhaps turning this permission off is stopping you from connecting a second time. It did not seem to matter whether it is on or off. But my point is that I don't have the BB data plan so it looks like that maybe that possible issue maybe EQO client is trying to use EDGE to connect somehow. I understand from piror discussion that it is just a Java app will try to use the default connection. But I'm sure I can connect the first time and the phone is all the same settings - all permissions etc - over wifi. Another note something is not right about permissions. I was just trying everything out during install, and I click on 'NO' when the EQO try to access my phone for the contact list. But EQO still get access to it ANYWAY and have my full address book loaded into EQO client. This suggest EQO client and the BB OS may not work exactly as we expected them to. re: permissionsSubmitted by peter on September 24, 2008 - 10:06am.
Hi again, I have finally managed to procure a BlackBerry with WiFi so I could see exactly what you are seeing. I did manage to replicate your issue. However, I was also able to make EQO work consistently on WiFi alone (for calling you will need the radio on though). It turns out that you need to keep the permission setting that says "Carrier Internet" set to Allow. EQO will always check for WiFi first. If you are worried about a ridiculous bill from your carrier because you don't believe what I am saying, you can always turn off the Mobile Network under Manage Connections or you can enter an invalid APN in the TCP settings--BUT, you need to change that permission setting to Allow.
