Possible Firewall Issues, or NOT :)

When I am trying to connect the mobile EQO asks for the access point, then tries connecting for a few seconds then gives the following error message: "EQO services temporary unavailable. Please retry at a later time." I am from Romania. I have a 3G service plan with a full featured internet access point. I am using Win XP SP2, Skype 2, and latest EQO. My phone is a Nokia 6630. I have successfulty installed EQO on both PC and phone. I am behind a router that acts as a firewall too. Should I forward some port? Or there is another reason this is not working for me. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

RE: Possible Firewall Issues, or NOT :)

I can say that it is definitely not a firewall issue. If you've signed into EQO on your pc, which I can tell from our server logs that you have, we can rule that out. I am seeing no activity from you via EQO mobile, which means that EQO Mobile is, for some reason, unable to connect to the internet. On your phone you must be connecting to the internet with a GPRS access point, not a WAP access point or via a gateway. On a Nokia 6630, you can get to your access point setting by opening up Settings -> Connections -> Access points from the menu. You can also create a new access point if you do not already have a GPRS access point. The connection details for the Romanian carrier Mobifon can be found here:

http://www.connex.ro/en/business/client-assistance/
online-assistance/internet-and-data/gprs/

I hope this helps! If you require further assistance please post again or e-mail me, chris@eqo.com.

Hi Chris,

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your answer but not for the solution too unfortunatelly.

I am using a GPRS access point. I have full web browsing capabilities (with opera browser for instance).

My Access point is internet.connex.ro now that you mentioned my carrier in your reply.

And EQO seams to connect but after a while times out or so. I mean using a different access point shows a different error message.

I will try again a few more times.

Let me know if you need some specific details of my end that will help debuging this.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi again,

Hi again,

I just figured something. Checking the Connection Manager now, while trying to connect to EQO on my phone, shows the active connection but no transfer (up or down).

However the first time i used the app there was a small traffic (a few hundred bytes ~500b if i remember right).

This happens while I am able to browse the web using the same access point, therefore my phone configuration is correct.

Probably the j2me security policy is wrong or something?

BTW: I was able to use Gmaps (another j2me app) on my phone using the same access point.

Aren't this all pointing to a bug in your application?

Thanks

Hi again :),

Hi again :),

Something else just crossed my mind: Is possible that the carrier to block access to your network (for obvious reasons i would say)?

Do you have any record of people from Romania using my carier Connex - Vodafone (MobiFon) accessing EQO successfully?

Thanks

Hi again,

Hi again,

Sorry for bothering you but i'm eager to test this app.

I've been looking for a while for such app without luck. I even started documenting for building my own j2me application for this purpose :).

The following happened, after i rebooted my phone:
- i entered my password on the mobile screen
- selected the access point and the connection wend through
- it waited for a while them poped up a message saying "Reconnecting to EQO" (or close anyway but the word was RECONNECTING)
- after another while i got that error message i mentioned first time

Checking the conection manager i saw the following traffic:

426 B - down
232 b - up

Are you sure there is no log of my activity on your end?

Thanks

RE: Romania issues, Mobifon

Hi Adrian,

First, I must thank you for providing so much detail. Because you are so keen to get this working, we are equally as keen to help you.

I can now say that I’ve done a very thorough investigation of our server logs and I can not find any traffic coming in from your mobile phone. I can see traffic from your EQO PC, but not from your EQO Mobile.

We only just added Romania to our list of supported countries so you are the first to comment on trouble pertaining to Romania and to Mobifon, which means that I can not confirm that other users have successfully used EQO with your carrier.

I do not think that this is a bug on our behalf, although it could be. However, many people all over the world, including us here at EQO, have been able to use EQO successfully on a Nokia 6630. I strongly feel that this is an issue with your internet connection. We are not receiving UDP packets from your phone when your phone is clearly trying to send them to us.

We have some ideas here about what your problem might be, please e-mail me at chris@eqo.com and I will get you in touch with our J2ME design lead and our Chief Architect. They would like to get some more information from you and, if you are willing, possibly perform some tests with you.

Sincerely,

Chris

Is finally working

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your support.

I made a firmware upgrade for my phone today and also redownloaded and reinstalled EQO Mobile.

Not sure which of the above is the cause but it works now. :)

Thanks for your support.

Nokia 6630 problem

Well I'm glad you got everything sorted out. I'm guessing that your phone's firmware was not dealing with UDP properly. Anyone else who is having trouble running EQO on a Nokia 6630 might also want to upgrade their firmware. To do this on Nokia phones you must contact your carrier and they will then usually direct you to the most convenient Nokia Care Center.

Hi Chris,

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your shown interest to help me solve my problem.

Your software looks and works great from what I've seen so far.

But I cannot help not showing a little disappointment, caused by my missunderstanding from the first place of how your sofware really works.

I mean i don't have SkypeOut credits nor intend to purchase any (not in the near feature anyways) and I hoped that EQO doesn't rely excusivelly on this but rather expected it to work somehow similar to the Useful Skype GPRS-3G application from http://www.useful-apps.com/new_page_21.htm.

Hey, afterall the Skype goal is to talk for free, this having as the immediate meaning not paying for the actual phone calls, even if it implies paying for the Internet or GPRS traffic (it may seam like some twisted psychology, especially in the situation GPRS or Internet is more expensive than the actual phone call, but would make me feel better this way :))

Thanks anyways!

Best Regards,
Adrian

EQO and SkypeOut

We appreciate your input and are always pleased to help.

As you mentioned, sending audio data over GPRS would be hugely more expensive than just using GPRS to connect calls, which is why EQO uses SkypeOut. Although SkypeOut costs money, SkypeOut credits are much cheaper than mobile long distance rates, so EQO can help its users save money:)

Thanks again for your comments.

Nokia 6630 problem, or NOT :)

After all the investigation, all the questions asked, the firmware upgrade, installing and reinstalling EQO Mobile many times I just fugured, by accident, what was causing the problem:

I had Symantec Security installed configured with High Firewall protection.

Yes, I know, is incredible stupid and funny in the same time.

Anyways so that you take note:
Nokia 6630 with older firmware should work fine as far as you don't have installed an antivirus blocking traffic :D

RE: Nokia 6630 problem, or NOT :)

Ah, Symantec Security could have been blocking EQO? I am wondering, if you turn High Firewall protection back on, do you experience the same problems on EQO Mobile? I would like to completely rule out the Nokia 6630 firmware update as the fix. Thanks again for your comments!

Firewall issues indeed, but on phone side :D

Yes it looks like i was right.

High firewall was the cause.

Correction, no need to update Nokia 6630 firmware

Thank you for checking. Note to users, if you have Symantec Security and you would like to use EQO, don't set your Firewall Protection to high! I'm retracting my previous statement about Nokia 6630 firmware. There is no need to update it from an EQO point of view.
