Local numbers

Hi again,

EQO is based on calling a local number. For my purposes I'd change my French phone/data package to take advantage of it – and find a deal with unlimited local calls.

But mobile carriers seem to be spotting that and are getting tougher on what numbers you can or can't access, particularly if VoIP is involved. For example, from one French provider (rough translation):

Allowed calls: numbers starting with 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 and 087 except numbers starting with 0590, 0592, 0594, 0596 and 0262.

Not allowed: calls to Special Numbers starting with 08 or 06 except numbers allotted to mobile operators and numbers to 4 figures starting with 3 (except 30 and 31). Calls starting with 0860 and 0868 and numbers of the Suppliers of Access Internet.

Some are less precise than this, but all mention "special numbers", and access to WAP or web.

So my questions are: 1. What specific local French number is EQO using? 2. How does EQO know that a mobile carrier might not bear down on its use in the future as a 'special number' – since the sole purpose of the number is actually to pass the call to the internet? 3. If that were the case, can EQO change the local number to continue giving service? 4. Ever had any 'local call' issues in other countries?

It does happen. Truphone, which allows mobiles to wifi connect, have had their range of numbers blocked by T-Mobile.

No doubt it's all been thought through – but since many users will commit to mobile packages purely to make the best use of EQO, you'd want to know EQO will be long-lived.

Yours discreetly,

Charlie Meechan

re: local numbers

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your post. You pose some very good questions. Let me try to answer them as best that I can.

1) What is our local access number in France?

I think you figured this out, but here it is anyway: +33170614616.

2) How do you know that carriers won't try to block your number?

The type of number we use is used for other valid purposes too, so I don't see that happening.

3)If that were the case, can EQO change the local number to continue giving service?

Yes we can! In some countries we have multiple local access numbers. Changing our local access number is a fairly easy thing to do.

4) Ever had any 'local call' issues in other countries?

Never.

Let me know if you have any other comments or questions!

Cheers,

Peter

Local access France

Orange France seems to have blocked the french access number, i.e. +33174180108.
Is is possible to change it ourselves somewhere in the midlet ?
IM is working fine.
Otherwise how to get acess, download a new version ?
Woiuld'ni it be beter if the soft allowed the user to change his access pointbefore each session, depending on the country he's currently and you would simply have tu publish regularly a list of acess point ?

RE: Local access France

We will look into checking if this number is being blocked. If so, we will change it and get a new number, which we set from our servers. What makes you think that this number is blocked? What exactly happens when you try to make a call? There are many reasons your call might be failing. As for access point control, we are limited by the capabilities of J2ME. When we finish our Symbian version we'll be able to offer more access point control.

Austria - local Number

similar problem with Austria

the local number that is used by EQO is 0720880001, which is listed by my provider as a special number and for which the provider (in this case ONE) charges around 20 cents per minute, and it seems impossible to change this rate. A regular fixed line number or any other Austrian mobile number instead currently would only cost me 5 cents per minute. And I could also change the contract to unlimited inclusion of certain mobile numbers or fixed line numbers.
So, my question is: is there any other local Austrian number I could use? or, could you provide such?

kind regards,
Claudia Westermann

again - local number

P.S. to previous post:

for clarification: all numbers starting with 0720 i.e. +43 720 would be qualified as special. Regular mobile phone numbers would be starting with +43 699 or +43 676 or +43 664 or +43 650 (possible there are some more), and a fixed line number for Vienna for example would start with +43 1 ...

and in the meantime I found out if you cannot choose a different number they apparently can make the existing work as a local one
http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=97822
they can change the number +43 720 xxxxx to work as well as
+43 123 0720 xxxxx which would be rated by the mobile phone service providers as a local Vienna number, and thus would be reachable in fact at local costs.

However, your software would need to be able to deal with these changes.

Could you also please tell me the local number that is used in Germany?

Thanks,

Claudia Westermann

Hello Claudia,

I am looking into this issue. I hope that there is something that we can do about it. Do you know if this "special" fee applies for all mobile carriers in Austria or if it it is just for yours?

Also, our local access number in Germany is +4969257378614.

Hello Peter, yes, the

Hello Peter,

yes, the special fee also counts for most other mobile phone services it goes up to 68 cents per minute (T-Mobile which is one of the largest service companies here).

In the meantime I also found this entry (same issue):

look for Austria
http://community.eqo.com/forum/eqo_supported_countries#comment-2245

apparently if the number you use would have enum entry or would be registered at e164.org then I could dial it with the 123 in the beginning and it would be charged as if it was a local number.

Best,
Claudia

Hi Claudia,

We are looking into this issue with our provider in Austria. We do not have control over where our number is registered--but they do. Hopefully something can be done. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you Peter. From the

Thank you Peter.

From the guys at the IP-Phone-Forum I just also got the information that the registration with e164.org does not cost anything and that it would just take a few minutes to do.

Would be great if they could do it.

Best,
Claudia
