EQO Supports the Shiny New BlackBerry Bold

Starting today, EQO supports the shiny new BlackBerry Bold. As the phone's name implies, this device is a statement-maker. It comes equipped with all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a top of the line smartphone--camera, GPS, WiFi, media viewing capabilities, bluetooth, et cetera, et cetera--plus it sports a fancy "bold" screen. Pretty neat, if you ask me.

Anyway, after you run out and buy a new Bold, come back to EQO and try it out.

EQO Adds Support for Lots of New Phones--Nokia E71 included

It appears to me that phone manufacturers are releasing new mobile phone models at a quickening pace. It used to be that you could have a phone for over a year without it looking dated. However, in the iPhone Era, if you bought a phone 6 months ago, you are already two years behind the times (even if the phone you bought was an iPhone). The Age of the Disposible Mobile Phone is seemingly incongruous in the increasingly environmentalist milieu of western society. However, I am certain that when someone finds a way to make money by selling a "Green" phone all of the other phone makers will jump on board. For now, though, we will have to content ourselves with the cycle of "man, I need a new phone" to "just bought a new phone joy" to "look at that guy's newer phone envy" to "damn, why am I stuck with this Zack Morris phone" and back to "man, I need a new phone".

One just-released phone that I am looking forward to trying out is the Nokia E71. Personally I am a big fan of phones that feature WiFi, GPS, full qwerty keypads, and sleek Scandinavian styling--what is not to love? Another great reason to love this phone is that it is now supported by EQO.

You may or may not have noticed, but we have added a whole host of new phones to our supported list of the Nokia, Sony Ericcson and Samsung varietals.

Now Accepting Credit Card Payments

When the "new" EQO was launched in May of '07, the only way to purchase more credits for international calling and messaging was via a Verified PayPal account. And, while PayPal is a safe, secure way to make online payments it is not yet available to everyone in every locale on the globe. There are now several ways that you can purchase EQO credits.

We at EQO realized that a long time ago, and we have worked hard to bring in more payment partners. Now, along with PayPal and Moneybookers, payments to EQO can be made with Visa and MasterCard.

Stayed tuned because we are sure to add some more payment options in the near future.

Now when you roam with EQO you can use Travel Mode, so that all of your EQO calls will use your inbound roaming minutes instead of outbound roaming minutes. You can also enter the number of a local prepaid SIM card in Travel Mode so that your calls will be routed and charged to that number. Still confused? Check out this super helpful Travel Mode how-to video—Episode III Revenge of the Chris, the 4^th and final video in our 6 part saga.

Although I know that you don’t need any convincing, there are several reasons to watch this clip. This is the first EQO video to be filmed on Bryan’s fancy new HD video camera (so if you are a friend or family member of Bryan’s or the dude who sold him the camera, you might enjoy this). Also, this is Chris’ final performance for EQO (you’ll either be saying “phew, thank God” or “Why Chris? Why? Say it ain’t so!”). And finally, this is amateur film-making at its worst (which is always good for a few chuckles).

EQO Now Accepts Payments from Moneybookers

Ever since we launched the "new" EQO, back in May, the purchase of EQO credits has been limited to EQO users with "Verified" PayPal accounts. We have received a few requests for alternative payment options. The EQO community has spoken and we have listened. Today we are pleased to announce that EQO users can now also purchase EQO credits with a Moneybookers' account.

Sutha Kamal, Beta Tester of the Month for November and First ever EQO Champ!

Usually our Beta tester of the month does something spectacular for us. For example, it really helps when our users test out EQO on phones that we don't have access to, or when they test out a new feature before it is released to the public. It also helps us when our users find bugs or suggest product enhancements. Constructive feedback is always welcome because it serves to make our product better--something that everyone here at EQO appreciates.

November's Beta Tester of the Month could be termed spectacular based solely on the sheer volume of email that he sent me. Sutha Kamal inundated two of my email inboxes and our support system with questions, suggestions, and a collection of comments, which could be referred to as "tips". Don't get me wrong now, Sutha wasn't just spamming us, he was asking some really good questions. And for that, Sutha has been awarded EQO’s Beta Tester of the Month award for November.

Sutha's inquisitive and thorough nature makes him an ideal candidate for our QA team...but since all of those positions are already ably filled, I offered Sutha the chance to become our very first official "EQO Champ" (and I wasn't surprised that he accepted the prestigious honour). EQO Champs will get the first crack at new EQO features, they will get their opinions heard directly by our elite Product team (more elite than the Red Berets), and they will even have the opportunity to chat with Bill Tam, our CEO. A Giant List of Mobile Website Favourites: Impress Your Friends (or Just Really Irritate Them)!

One of the coolest things about mobile phones these days is their ability to access the Internet from pretty much anywhere in the world (well, not in a submarine or in the Chunnel or even in my basement for that matter--but you get the idea). This means that I have access to all of the super vital information that I need to survive while I am in the mall or stuck in traffic or at the pub--like "What is the LD50 of vitamin C in humans?" or "Did Gilligan ever get off of that island?" or "Is Simon Gagne concussed or not?" or "Is 1/0 really infinity"?

The fact that I can get the answers to all this stuff on my phone blows my mind; however, the fact that most mobile browsers tend to explode in my face or melt in my hands or just plain freeze up whenever I access any of the websites that I normally frequent on my desktop really takes the fun out of mobile research.

That is why I have been so happy ever since I got my hands on a giant list of mobile websites. Mobile websites are basically no frills versions of their flashier desktop cousins. This means that they load really quickly, use very little data, and are altogether totally awesome.

One of our Windows Mobile Beta testers, Don (KE4QPF), has been compiling a list of his favourite sites for his Motorola i930. I am ever so thankful to Don, not only for his testing of EQO, but also for his giant list! You can get a hold of this giant list of mobile internet bookmarks directly from his personal website or, with some added instruction and discussion, from his post on HowardForums. Check it out, put it on your Window Mobile device, and browse the mobile web with impunity!

Bruce Berger, Beta tester of the Month for September / EQO toques have arrived!

I am pleased to announce that Bruce Berger has been awarded the Beta tester of the month award for September!

When Bruce tried to start EQO on his brand new Motorola V3xx phone, he was repeatedly prompted for permission to connect to the Internet. These annoying prompts made EQO unusable on his phone. As it turns out, AT&T has added this “security” feature to the V3xx (similar to how they messed around with the Nokia E62) to prevent “untrusted” software from damaging your phone. The only way around this problem is to modify the registry files in your phone. So, following the instructions listed in a post on Howard forums, Bruce managed to get rid of those irritating “security” prompts and use EQO on his new phone. Congratulations Bruce.

For his courage, diligence, and sense of adventure, Bruce will be the first to receive a brand spanking new EQO toque (just in time for winter in the Northern hemisphere)! Watch out for snowballs Bruce...

EQO on the iPhone?

Everyday I get email from people asking me when EQO is going to work on the iPhone. And, although we don’t have a version of EQO that is iPhone compatible yet, we are not standing idly by. We now have three iPhones here at EQO HQ; One successfully unlocked (props to Mike, EQO’s resident Web Wizard, for doing this a few weeks ago), one unmodified (essentially useless here in Canada), and one bricked (essentially useless everywhere).

Speaking of bricked iPhones (maybe we can get in on the antitrust lawsuit against Apple...), I believe that Apple made a huge mistake by locking down their phone in the first place. If they didn’t have a ridiculously exclusive deal with AT&T, their biggest problem would be figuring out how to manufacture enough phones to meet world demand. Total domination of the wireless market would ensue, followed by the unleashing of Apple’s own wireless network, and then the eventual take over the FCC, the BBC, the WWF, the WWE, and the UN—with Steve Jobs being anointed Secretary General of the known Universe.

Sorry, I got a little carried away. Where was I? Oh yeah, we are not standing idly by...we are thinking about how to implement EQO on the iPhone and I, myself, am confident that we will come up with a pretty good solution for the world's hottest new phone. Watch this space.

Now Even More Phones Supported!

Although it certainly isn't the iPhone, at the very least the Nokia N81 "sort of looks like it" (according to a myopic friend). As it turns out, the phone is actually pretty sweet; You can listen to music on it, you can play cool games on it, and, best of all, now you can use EQO on it!

We have also added a few other phones to our supported phone list: Nokia 5310, 5610, 6555, 7500 Prism, 7900 Prism, E51, and Sony Ericsson K770.

Thanks to our friends at Nokia for loaning us a bunch of these phones. It is much easier to add phones to our supported list if we actually get to test them out ourselves. I wish more phone manufacturers were this helpful!

Tim McIntyre, Beta Tester of the Month for August / Samsung U600 Now Supported!

Recently I asked those in the EQO community with unsupported phones to let me know if they were interested in testing EQO for us on their handsets. Since then I have received dozens of responses. The majority of the requests that I have received have been for Palm devices. Unfortunately for these rabid Palm fans, we are not planning on supporting any Palm OS devices in the short term future (althoughI can say that we will be supporting Windows Mobile OS Palm devices very soon).

My campaign for more supported phones did have one giant success, largely in part to Tim McIntyre, who never gave up in his testing of EQO on his Samsung U600. For this triumph, Tim will be receiving an EQO prize pack! Congratulations Tim!

Is your phone not supported? I may be able to help

There are currently 265 different phone models that work with EQO. That may seem like a lot of phones; however, there are probably about a kajillion different phone models out there today (and the list just keeps on growing). We do test as many phones as we can get our grubby paws on, but it would be impossible for us to test everything on the market.

There are minimum requirements for EQO--your phone needs to support Java applications (J2ME, MIDP 2.0 to be more precise), your phone needs to have a max .Jar Size of at least 220 KB, and you need to have full access to mobile data--but if you have a phone that is not on our supported list, and you think it should be, please let me know at support@eqo.com and I get you set up with a suitable file to test out on your phone.

Tristen Georgiou, Beta Tester of the Month for July

July was a pretty good month. For starters, it was National Ice Cream Month, and who doesn’t like ice cream?

I suppose that lactose intolerant people don’t eat much ice cream—or if they do, they really regret it later on. Anyhoo, I like ice cream and so I liked July.

Last month was also exciting for me because July’s battle for Beta Tester of the Month was a particularly intense one. The winner, Tristen Georgiou, was EQO’s first local winner of the prestigious award (Yes, Tristen lives in Vancouver, the glorious city that is also home to EQO World Headquarters). Tristen valiantly alerted us to a problem that he was having when he had forgotten his password. He uses EQO on his Motorola L2 to call Greece, Cyprus, and Smithers. Congratulations Tristen!

EQO Soccer Moves Outdoors

After a solid undefeated season of indoor soccer at Sportstown BC, the EQO All-stars took their high octane, run-and-gun style of play outdoors. The opponents, UTStarcom (formally known as Telos), a strong squad of 20 men, came to Albert Airey Park looking to avenge a prior 5-1 embarrassing loss.

From the opening kick, you could tell that the squad from UTStarcom was determined to not be whitewashed a second time. Harsh tackles and strong words nearly led to fisticuffs more than once (watch the video and you’ll see what I mean!). However, cooler heads prevailed and when all was said and done, the match was declared a 2-2 draw.

1st Star: Colin Quon--Carved his way through defenders, helped to break up the brouhaha between Stan and a colorfully-mouthed defender, and scored the game tying goal off a beauty of a corner kick.

2nd Star: "King" Richard Chow--Stopped about 87 shots, half of them from point blank range.

3rd Star: Amar Kulkarni--This UBC coop sensation was a bull out there.

Honourable Mention: Kelly Ko--After hearing about the misogynous remarks of a member of the other team at half time, she put forth an inspired 2nd half of soccer.

Philippe-Henri Bazire--Beta Tester of the Month for June

Yeah, I know it is July--and that it has been July for a quite some time now--but I can't just blow off June. June was an exciting month at EQO. The first month after launching a new product is always a busy time and June was no exception. This first month is always the month were the most bugs are found on any Beta program. This translates into a lot of work for beta testers. Thanks to the efforts of our users, we have fixed a lot of bugs--thanks for the help everybody!

Speaking of EQO users, Philippe-Henri Bazire of Switzerland is probably the hardest working Beta tester we have ever had. He has tried fruitlessly to get EQO on his Nokia 6170. Every time he tries to download the file he gets an error message that says "invalid file type". Are there any Nokia 6170 users out there in EQOland who have advice for Philippe? He would really like to see this work on his 6170.

On the bright side, Philippe has had success with his Nokia 6234. So he has had a taste of what EQO has to offer. For all his hard work, Philippe will be receiving one of the hottest prizes out there--an EQO Prize Pack! Woot!

EQO Mobile: Now Supports Eight More Countries!

Our quest for world domination....I mean, our quest to paint the entire globe EQO-orange just got one step closer to becoming a reality. The list of supported countries has now hit 28 with the addition of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. This leaves only 217 independent states, inhabited dependent territories, and areas of special sovereignty to be conquered...did I say conquered? I meant covered. Actually, I really meant freed. That's right; freed from the oppressive international calling rates charged by traditional carriers.

If we haven't made it to your country yet, don't worry we'll be there soon!

Glorious Victory

In one of the most thrilling indoor soccer matches in recent history, a fierce squad from EQO downed a plucky team from Ventyx, the company formally known as MDSI, 2 – 1. I am not sure if this is why they changed their name, but in their first meeting, EQO thrashed MDSI 7-2. This time, reborn like the phoenix, Ventyx was hungry for revenge and put up a valiant effort before finally going down to the upstarts from EQO. Check out the highlight package on YouTube.

With mere minutes left in the game, EQO’s goal-sniping assassin, Stanley Chiu, buried the game winner. The glorious victory was a fitting send off for long-time EQO veteran Craig Hughes. In his final match with EQO, “Captain Britain” tallied a goal and blocked 5 shots on the way to his first star selection. After the gutsy performance, Hughes dedicated the win to Sir Bobby Charlton.

The match was followed up with celebratory pints and words of well-wishing for the departing Mr. Hughes. His deft skills and savvy leadership will be missed both on and off the pitch by all.

Lars Oliver Dam: Beta Tester of the Month--April

Congratulations to Lars Oliver Dam of Brightwater, New Zealand—EQO Communications latest Beta Tester of the Month!

Lars Oliver Dam has been testing out EQO Mobile on his Sharp GX17. Well, maybe testing isn’t quite the right word. Lars Oliver Dam didn’t make it to the testing stage, as he got stuck trying to get EQO mobile on his phone. First off, the text message never arrived on his phone. Secondly, when he tried http://www.eqo.com/a, he got an error that said that the download was too big. What's more, when he tried to Bluetooth the file over to his Sharp, the .jar file was accepted, but the .jad was rejected. Lars has earned this award by keeping a positive attitude while patiently trying every method known to Man for downloading EQO Mobile onto his phone. In the end, we both decided that his mobile phone model could not be supported by this version of EQO Mobile. Personally, I believe that our next release will work on Lars’ phone (because we are adding new and improved methods of download), but we’ll just have to wait and see!

There are hundreds of phones on the market today. At EQO, we can’t possibly test all of these models ourselves. Although I would like to try out every phone, some devices are not accessible or affordable enough for us to get our hands on. This is where the EQO community plays a huge role in our success. Anytime I get a report from a Beta tester claiming success or failure I can either add it to our growing list of supported phones or I can cross it off our wish list. And even though the failures are disappointing to hear about at the time, they are still valuable for the data that they provide to us for future development.

Dimuthu Attanayake: Beta Tester of the Month--March

For the first time ever, the recipient of the EQO Communications Beta tester of the month award is not named Bob.

This month's contest was a closely fought battle with several BlackBerry wielding Bobs (and even a Bill) challenging for the title. However, an EQO user from the Resplendent Isle stood out amongst the crowd of Bobs—Dimuthu Attanayake.

Dimuthu Attanayake of Sri Lanka earned March’s esteemed honour by testing the limits of his Motorola E1000. Dimuthu overcame a plethora of “Data Network Errors” to test EQO Mobile on the Teardrop of India. And although Dimuthu is still dealing with an EQO for Skype plug-in that is not cooperating with our servers, he is resilient in his effort to succeed. And for that, we salute him (and lavish him with free EQO cool stuff). Congratulations Dimuthu!

I am pretty excited that the Beta tester of the month award has made its first appearance on the Indian Ocean. Where will the award travel to next? Madagascar perchance? Maybe Reunion Island, or even Diego Garcia?

What's in a name?

When I received a brand new box of gleaming orange business cards the other day, I was pretty excited about the prospect of distributing them to all of my contacts. You see, EQO business cards aren’t your run-of-the mill, rectangular scrap of card stock. These shining spectacles to behold are shaped like the company logo, graced with luxurious ridges, and, most importantly, adorned with all of my particulars. The arrival of my business cards got me in a better mood than a steaming cup of Mars Chococcino on Monday morning. However, my stationary-induced state of bliss was short-lived. For the first card that I released into the wild brought a most unsatisfactory response to my heart (and from my own mother, no less): “Who is Eee-queue-ohh?” Although I am not a stickler for details, it irks me when I hear someone butchering our company’s name—especially when that person is a close blood relative. A name is not just a name (company branding became fashionable after Shakespeare)—it is the very essence of who we are. No, we aren’t E-Q-O and we aren’t ECO either. For those of you who are new to us, or for those of you who were previously misinformed, EQO is pronounced ′ekə℧. And, for those of you not comfortably acquainted with the International Phonetic Alphabet, “echo” works just as well.

Bobby Rohrkemper: Beta tester of the month—February

This month’s winner of the celebrated Beta tester award and free EQO prize pack is EQO user Bobby Rohrkemper. Bobby Rohrkemper had been trying for nine months to connect to our servers on his Sony-Ericsson k800i. For nine months (that's enough time to have a baby), whenever Bobby tried to start EQO Mobile he got the “EQO Mobile service is temporarily unavailable” error. Despite what this message was claiming, our fantabulous service has been available, continuously, for the last nine months. Incidentally, this is the second most annoying error message of all-time (the “Data Network Error” being the hands-down most annoying error message of all-time). Bobby, who is on the Orange network in Switzerland, tried every possible solution that he could think of and all of the possible solutions that Chris and I could throw at him. It seemed as if nothing was going to work; however, in mid-February Bobby’s persistence paid off. The combination of a helpful how-to post on our forum, the proper APN for Orange Switzerland (‘internet’), and the application of these settings to Bobby’s Java applications seemed to do the trick. For his patience and stick-to-ativeness, Bobby Rohrkemper incontestably deserves EQO’s Beta Tester of the month award for February!

The EQO Team gets a Wii

This week, another momentous event occurred at EQO world headquarters here in Vancouver, B.C. No, it wasn’t a foosball match of epic proportions between Chris and I, it was the unveiling of our office’s very own Nintendo Wii! I felt like a kid on Christmas morning, opening up the box and pulling out the Wii and the accompanying Wiimote. The christening of our Wii was pretty much the highlight of my year so far; however, the event did have a few hitches. Don’t worry, nobody lost an eye or threw the Wiimote through a window—it turns out that we just didn’t think through all of the logistics of setting up and using a Wii in our boardroom.

Robert Broze: Beta Tester of the Month--January

A lot of people in the EQO community don’t even realize that they are Beta testers, so I wouldn’t expect many of them to know that they are eligible for a super-fantastic Beta tester award. That is why I’m announcing here, for the first time ever, the “EQO Communications Beta Tester of the Month” award.

A Beta test’s success relies primarily upon the comments of its Beta testers. Software developers need to hear both positive things, like “EQO Mobile’s IM is totally awesome!”, and constructive things, like “Why don’t you do it this way instead?”, so that they know what to improve upon and what to throw away. Here at EQO, we appreciate all of the valuable feedback that our Beta testers have given us over the last year. The "Beta Tester of the Month" award is just one way for us to show our appreciation.

We are also extending this opportunity to anyone else who wants to try out EQO Mobile on their Motorola RIZR Z3, KRZR K1, RAZR Maxx, or A1200 Ming. If you are already an EQO user, you can change your phone details on your account page. If you are not an EQO user, you should probably sign up.
