People Hate Mobile Ads? Weird.

Today I came across this brilliant post over at MobileCrunch, whom I love, entitled "Shocking News: People Hate Mobile ads!". Yeah, no kidding eh? The mobile advertising business is widely tipped as one of the next big markets to take off. I am wary of this even though advertising can enable some wonderfully free services, just take a look at everything Google does, not to mention the glorious Facebook. I am not looking forward to having any of my regular mobile activities interrupted by advertisement. In fact, I feel that I will likely hate the bulk of mobile advertising, just as I do the bulk of mainstream advertising now. In this increasingly digital age, I find myself no longer tolerant of TV and Radio commercials. My tolerance for advertisement extends only to those ads that do not impede me from the task at hand. Web ads and print ads I can easily ignore, but what truly angers me are the commercials at the movie theater for the theater once I'm already in my seat (I still like the previews!). Then there is Shaw On Demand, my digital ppv service, why do they show me a three minute commercial I can't skip once I've bought the movie? They tempt me to rent again or, even worse, illegally download.

Not only ads...

...also big red WARNINGS (Do not copy this movie, blah blah blah...) at the beginning and at the end of my legally bought DVD movies pisses me off. Usually I can't skip them neither go back to the DVD menu. Why should I tolerate these even in 7 different languages??? I am pretty sure that illegally downloaded movies doesn't contain these tiresome notices...

Anyway, back to the point. The reason why people might hate ads on their mobiles is maybe very simple. Whereas on big PC screen you can simply ignore ads (and most of users does as the effect of so-called banner blindness), on small mobile screen this is very difficult, almost impossible. You, as the mobile app developers know very well how difficult is to put all the necessary information on the small screen and reach the maximum comfort and efficiency. Just try to imagine that you'd have to add a commercial. Not very nice idea, is it? ;-)

Ehm, is there any "longest comment" contest? Am I going to win anything? :-)))

RE: Not only ads...

While your comment was most excellent, I'm sorry to say that it is not the longest entry ever posted on the EQO Community Blogs. All I have to offer you are my thanks and appreciation of your fine work. I wholeheartedly agree on all counts. I just bought the movie so don't tell me I can't copy it when I try to watch it, which just makes me want to copy the movie when I previously had no inkling of desire. Furthermore, you are bang on when it comes to fitting everything onto the mobile screen; it is hard. Thankfully screens are getting bigger and better, but sadly they will surely be filled with advertising clutter.
